FAQs

Where do I park?

Parking behind the church is limited and on Sundays we try to leave the few spaces available for our elderly and walking-challenged worshipers.

There is also free parking on Sundays in the public parking lots or at meters. The Northampton Parking Garage, however, does not have free parking.

What happens when I get there?

You will be greeted by a Greeter in the hallway and then by an Usher who will hand you a bulletin that guides everyone through the order of worship.

Worship begins with music at the hour to help you get centered and prepared to worship.

After a Welcome and some brief announcements, we participate in The Passing of the Peace. From that point on, our service features readings from scripture, preaching, prayer, and music. At times, you will be invited to stand, sing, pray, greet your neighbor, be in silence, or read in unison.

How long does the service last?

Most worship services last about an hour . On particular Sundays we may baptize an infant or an adult; receive new members; offer a time for children; bless animals, a marriage, or backpacks before the first day of school. On these special occasions the service may be a little longer.

Where do my kids go?

During the 10:00am service, there is infant and childcare available for children 0-4 years of age in our nursery. Children K-6 grade begin church in the Sanctuary with their parents. After the children gather on the chancel steps, they will go to Sunday School. Parents are always welcome to accompany their children at this time to Addis Hall for Children’s Worship. On Communion Sunday, children begin downstairs in Addis Hall for Children’s Worship before heading to the Sanctuary to join their parents for communion.

What do I wear?

No matter what your personal style, you’ll be comfortable here. Wear what makes you comfortable. If you prefer dressy, business, or casual attire, chances are there will be others dressed much like you no matter when you visit.

Will there be anybody like me at Edwards Church?

All kinds of people visit from near and far: Curious, skeptical, life-long church goers, and folks who have never been to church before will all be there on any given Sunday. People of all ages, stages of life, and spiritual development are drawn to Edwards Church.

Am I required to do anything during the service?

You are encouraged to participate as fully in our worship as you feel comfortable.

The congregation is invited to stand several times for singing hymns, certain prayers, and readings.

A voluntary offering is received every Sunday to express our gratitude and to help God’s work get accomplished here in the Northampton community and around the world.

Do I have to be a church member to take communion?

All are welcome at God’s table. You don’t have to be a member of Edwards Church or the United Church of Christ to partake.

Who can become a member?

We welcome all who respond in trust and obedience to God’s grace in Jesus Christ and desire to become part of the membership and ministry of Edwards Church.

No one is denied membership because of race, ethnic origin, worldly condition, or any other reason not related to faith. We extend the fellowship of Christ to all.

How would I go about becoming a member here?

First, get to know us and let us get to know you, at your own pace. This means coming to church on Sunday and, if you wish, other events. Once you have come a few times, chances are good you will have met our ministers while arriving or leaving the sanctuary. Let one of them know you are interested. We hold gatherings for folks interested in exploring membership and are happy to include you in the next one. New member are received from time to time all year round.

Is there a coffee hour or fellowship time after church?

After each worship service, Addis Hall directly under the sanctuary is open for a time of fellowship and refreshment. We invite you to stick around for a snack or beverage, strike up a conversation, and make some new friends!

Do you offer a Bible study for adults?

Yes. Adult forum meets virtually on Wednesdays at noon. Together we explore the lectionary text or a specific topic of interest. For further information or to be added to this thought provoking group please contact the Minister at minister@edwardschurchnorthampton.org or the main office at info@edwardschurchnorthampton.org.

Is the church handicap accessible?

Yes. Our building is handicap accessible. We also have a Safe Church policy in place.

Will I have to introduce myself?

You can expect a warm greeting from members of the congregation, but don’t worry! You won’t be asked to stand up and introduce yourself. We hope you feel comfortable to stick around for some conversation and snacks after worship and you can introduce yourself to whoever you’d like at that time.

Do I have to sing?

We certainly encourage everyone to join us in musical worship and celebration (Try it! It feels great!), but singing is not mandatory.

Do I have to put money in the offering plate?

Every Sunday we maintain the ancient Christian practice of receiving an offering to support the church’s ministries. We welcome your gifts and encourage everyone to live a life marked by generosity. Every gift, of every size, is valued, however, you don’t have to give anything. If you do share a gift, you can be sure it will be used for God’s work.

How can I get more information?

Please feel free to chat with one of our ministers after church. You can also email info@edwardschurchnorthampton.org and we’ll make sure your question gets to the right place.
