David Kidwell was appointed Minister of Music in 2000, making him one of the longest-serving musicians in the history of Edwards Church. David is an accomplished organist, choral director, orchestra conductor, composer, and keyboardist. He became a church organist at age 12, serving churches in his native Virginia, West Hartford, and Springfield prior to his ministry at Edwards Church.
David’s compositions are performed frequently by the Edwards Church Choir, and he has written works commissioned by churches across the country. Several of his organ compositions have been published by Lorenz, and a book of his organ arrangements of spirituals will be published in 2018.
David holds a bachelor’s degree in music from The University of Mary Washington and a master’s degree in composition from The Hartt School. He studied conducting at the Tanglewood Music Center and the South Carolina Conductors Institute, and he was a participant in the Music Direction Intensive at the Goodspeed Opera House.
David is a member of the American Guild of Organists, the American Federation of Musicians, the League of American Orchestras, Broadcast Music International, and Phi Beta Kappa. He is the proud recipient of the 2004 Young Alumnus Merit award from The University of Mary Washington.
